Description
Delicious homemade donuts that can be filled with your favorite jams or creams.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Granulated sugar or powdered sugar, for coating
- Jam (strawberry, raspberry, etc.)
- Nutella
- Pastry cream or whipped cream
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, combine the warm milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until combined.
- Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
- Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or a round cutter (about 3 inches) and a smaller cutter for the hole to cut out donuts.
- Place the cut donuts and holes on parchment-lined baking sheets, cover loosely, and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
- Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully add 2-3 donuts at a time, frying for about 60-90 seconds per side until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack set over a paper towel-lined tray.
- While still warm, roll the donuts in granulated sugar or dust with powdered sugar.
- Fit a piping bag with a long, thin tip (like a Bismarck tip).
- Fill the bag with your chosen filling (jam, Nutella, or cream).
- Insert the tip into the side of a cooled donut and gently squeeze to fill. Wipe away any excess.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warm but not hot to activate the yeast properly.
- Try different fillings like fruit jams or creamy fillings for variation.
- Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature.
