Description

Delicious homemade donuts that can be filled with your favorite jams or creams.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Granulated sugar or powdered sugar, for coating
  • Jam (strawberry, raspberry, etc.)
  • Nutella
  • Pastry cream or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the warm milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until combined.
  4. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  7. Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or a round cutter (about 3 inches) and a smaller cutter for the hole to cut out donuts.
  8. Place the cut donuts and holes on parchment-lined baking sheets, cover loosely, and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  9. Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Carefully add 2-3 donuts at a time, frying for about 60-90 seconds per side until golden brown.
  11. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack set over a paper towel-lined tray.
  12. While still warm, roll the donuts in granulated sugar or dust with powdered sugar.
  13. Fit a piping bag with a long, thin tip (like a Bismarck tip).
  14. Fill the bag with your chosen filling (jam, Nutella, or cream).
  15. Insert the tip into the side of a cooled donut and gently squeeze to fill. Wipe away any excess.

Notes

  • Make sure the milk is warm but not hot to activate the yeast properly.
  • Try different fillings like fruit jams or creamy fillings for variation.
  • Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature.
