Description

A delicious apple kringle with a sweet glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 34 apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk and 2 ¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, ½ cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt.
  3. Once the yeast mixture is ready, add ½ cup melted unsalted butter and 2 eggs. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  4. On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough rises, peel and slice 3-4 apples. In a bowl, toss the apples with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, ½ cup of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (if using). Set aside.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface, approximately 12×18 inches.
  7. Place the apple mixture down the center of the dough, leaving about 2 inches on each side. Cut slits along the edges of the dough, about 1 inch apart. Fold the slits over the apple filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the kringle on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it rest for 15 minutes before baking. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. In a bowl, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk if necessary.
  10. Once the kringle is out of the oven and slightly cooled, drizzle the vanilla glaze over the top. Allow it to set for a few minutes before slicing.

Notes
